Fried Green Tomatoes

Crispy on the outside, tender and tangy on the inside—fried green tomatoes are a true Southern classic. Made from firm, unripe tomatoes, this dish is simple yet irresistibly delicious. Perfect as an appetizer, side dish, or even layered on sandwiches!

Ingredients:

  • 4 medium firm green tomatoes
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cornmeal (or breadcrumbs for extra crunch)
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup buttermilk (or regular milk)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon paprika (optional, for a smoky kick)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions:

  1. Slice the green tomatoes into ½-inch thick rounds. Pat dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture.
  2. Set up three shallow bowls:
    • Bowl 1: flour mixed with salt, pepper, and seasonings.
    • Bowl 2: whisked eggs and buttermilk.
    • Bowl 3: cornmeal (or breadcrumbs).
  3. Dredge each tomato slice in flour, dip into egg mixture, then coat in cornmeal. Press gently to help the coating stick.
  4. Heat about ½ inch of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. When hot, carefully place tomato slices in the pan (don’t overcrowd).
  5. Fry for 2–3 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy.
  6. Remove and place on a paper towel–lined plate to drain excess oil.
  7. Serve hot with ranch, remoulade, or spicy aioli dipping sauce.
